Creating music – creative spaces

Remember our last beautiful summer at DOK?

Over the past few years we’ve seen an exciting development of reclaiming abandoned sites and turning them into cultural melting pots where music, arts and creativity meet. DOK, in the old part of the city-harbor, was one of the first grand scale examples founded in 2011.

Let’s not wait for the summer and see what spring brings first. Now there’s “KERK”: a relatively new project started in may 2014. Settling down in the former “Sidaplax” factories in the suburbs of Ghent, KERK provides an industrial infrastructure for creative minds and young entrepreneurs.

Next month they will be joined by Democrazy, a name that night crawlers of Ghent are certainly familiar with. Known for their quality line-ups, Democrazy keeps the finger on the pulse of future music. In March they will hold a one-month residency at KERK with concerts, parties, expos, performances and a “black music” record fair.

For the creators amongst us, you can also enroll for two different kinds of workshops during this residency. Divided over 4 days you can learn everything about “Ableton Live” and the possibilities of this music-making software. Are you more into live sounds and bands? Find yourself tweaking and turning knobs during yet another 4-day workshop focused on live-PA mixing. One exciting side note: you will be able to test your freshly acquired skills as an assistant during one of the concert nights planned on the same evening as the workshop itself.

That’s what they call hands-on experience.
